Grid Generation - Test Cases ? Forums? Etc

Folks, While automeshing continues to improve I still find that I need to mesh by "hand" on many occasions. I am sure we all find that sometimes the man hours for meshing far outway the effort to setup, run and post process.

So some questions.

Should there be a general meshing Forum? A meshing section in the Wiki? Some challange/benchmark problems for grid generation software?

Just a thought. - Andy R

Yes.

I have the same wish. We should set up a mesh forum, like Fluent, CFX. it will be very useful for all the CFD people.

There is already a mesh section in CFD-Wiki:

http://www.cfd-online.com/Wiki/Meshing

It needs to be developed further and anyone can work on this.

There is also a Validation and test case section:

http://www.cfd-online.com/Wiki/Valid...and_test_cases

Nothing there conserns meshing today, but anyone can of course start to develop such a sub section. CFD-Wiki is open for everyone to improve.

Regarding the wish to have a special meshing discussion forum. There isn't that much traffic in this main forum about meshing and I see no problem to keep the meshing discussion in this main forum for now.

Re: Grid Generation - Test Cases ? Forums? Etc

Hello,

I am currently working on an open-source mesh generation project. The first step is to create a prismatic boundary layer into an existing tetrahedral volume grid. For surface and tetrahedral mesh generation I currently rely on other open-source software. There is one test-case that I have agreed upon with my sponsor/customer It is a very simple generic geometry that I have had difficulties with, with commercial meshing software (admittedly a few years ago). I'd be happy to share this geometry with others and compare the results of different mesh generators.

What would be the best way to put it into the Wiki? Is there an option to upload something like a STEP file? Or is it better to set up a download section on my own website and link to that from the Wiki?

Regards, Oliver

You could just create a meshing section in the validation and test case section here:

http://www.cfd-online.com/Wiki/Valid...and_test_cases

You can also upload zip or gz files to CFD-Wiki, so you can just zip your STEP files together and upload them to the wiki. You can also link to this uploaded file from the page you write to explain the test case.

I will try that later -- thanks
