Is there anyone who have any experience with volume averaging as applied to flow in a porous medium?

You should check out "The Method of Volume Averaging" by S. Whitaker. Goes through the fundamental derivations of much of the volume averaging method.

this thesis was done by a colleague of mine, it explains the volume averaging method applied to porous media and also has a number of sources if you want to go into more detail
