Rubber Valve (Relief valve)

Hello guys,

We are developing a product, and need to do some simulations to validate it.

The product is like a small tube with a rubber valve that will work like a relief valve, i.e. it will deform after it reaches a set pressure allowing the fluid to pass through.

Is it possible to simulate this with CFD? I've been looking for a way to simulate a elastic flow-induced deformation, but I still haven't come across anything useful so far.

Hi James,

One of the ways I could imagine doing this would be a full 2-way FSI (depending on the detail or scope of analysis), you could refer to Tutorial 23 of CFX to get some idea..even if you're not employing CFX-ANSYS, searching for that tutorial would help elaborating the approach..
IMO another simpler way of doing this could be a 1-way FSI.. to begin with, establish the pressure loads of the Fluid and transfer them to Structual module (using fluid-solid BC) and observing the structural deformation.. if that deformation is to be studied further in presence of passing flow then the deformed shape could be modeled as a new geometry and separately evaluated in CFD... just an opinion & from what i could quickly comprehend..
