I am modeling the flow of a high speed gas jet (Mach 0.5) into a large volume of water using OpenFoam. I would like to model the turbulent interface between the phases, so I am using a full 3D simulation with LES. I am primarily concerned with the portion of the jet near the exit, where the gas flow is slowing down and expanding as it transfers momentum with the water.

Should I use a Volume of Fluid method (compressibleMultiphaseInterFoam) or a Euler-Euler method (twoPhaseEulerFoam) for the solver?

The Euler-Euler method solves conservation equations for each phase separately and assumes that one phase is dispersed in the other. (Although there is a mulitphaseEulerFoam, so which phase is dispersed in the other probably doesn't matter.) The concern with the Euler-Euler method is that the gas would artificially disperse into the liquid too quickly.

The VoF method only solves one set of momentum and pressure equations for the system. The concern is that the momentum transfer between phases won't be strong enough and the jet will take a longer distance than it should to slow down.

Again, which solver should I use for a high-speed, high-flow-rate gas jet into water?

Hello,

Have you been able to find out the right solver for your application?

I am in a similar situation as I need to inject a high-velocity gas jet (about 120 m/s) through a nozzle horizontally into a large pool of water. I need to find out the gas jet penetration and the jet trajectory as well as the induced circulation of water. I didn't have much luck with twoPhaseEulerFoam. Could you please give me some advise?

Hi,

CompressibleInterFoam does a good job with a submerged gas jet. I haven't been able to get twoPhaseEulerFoam to work with medium or high speed flows.

Hi Leonard - it seems to me that the highly coupled nature of twoPhaseEulerFoam with compressibility and energy effects is the source of divergence. I'll try with multiphaseEulerFoam as well as with compressibleInterFoam. Thanks
