velocity distribution on an airfoil

Hello guys,

I'm new to CFD and I would like to ask you a basic question on CFD techinques:
when I run a simulation and the program computes the velocity distribution on a the 3D airfoil does it refer to the potential flow theory? i.e. is it the velocity on the edge of the boundary layer? and in case the answer is "yes" how do we deal with separation?

thank you very much guys, sorry for the dumb question, I'm just new at CFD:)

The computations take into account your boundary layer since even the surface is meshed.

Hi
It definitely depends on the solver type selected. (i.e. viscous or non-viscous).
If the solver is viscous, (in case proper settings for boundary layer mesh is set) it is possible to resolve the boundary layer and therefore separation if any.
If the solver is non-viscous, there will be no boundary layer and it tends to potential theory.
