Hello,

in the near future I will calculate the flow over an airfoil at different angles of attack up to 40 degrees. Do you think that it is possible to get good results concerning pressure distribution, lift and drag with the standard k-eps model even at hight angles of attack ? Or is a low re number k-w model without wall functions more recommended ? Any hints will be appriciated !

Victor

(1). That question was answered in early 70's when the low Reynolds number model was invented and later widely studied. (2). Even the Baldwin-Lomax model covers the whole flow field including the sublayer. (3). If you are an expert, it is all right to use k-epsilon model with wall function. If you are limited by resources, it is all right to use it also. Otherwise, the solution obtained will be very fuzzy, meaning that it can not be improved. (it will give you something, which will always keep you very busy.) (4). I am not saying that there is a perfect low Reynolds number available. What I am saying is it can not give you good results. (fuzzy result may be acceptable , when you have a lot of other constraints.)

You may use Menter's SST k-omega model (see, for example, AIAA J. v.32 N8 1994, pp. 1598-1605).

Hello Viktor. I have just finnished my M.Sc. thesis in Naval Architecture, concerning different turbulence models and wall functions when predicting Submarine manoeuvrability. I tested three different turb. models with three different near wall treatments, all available in FLUENT. One of the testcases was a 2D NACA0015 section. Angle of attack 0-20. Rec=6e6. If you are interested, I could mail it to you. Winzipped worddocument = 5.8 Mb
