Default H1 visa quotas

This question is not directly linked to CFD, although it may interest people seeking CFD jobs in the US. Does anyone have information regarding the US quotas of H1 visas for foreign engineers ? In particular, how many are/were issued for 99 and 2000, and on which month do the quotas start ? Is the sponsoring procedure really complicated for the potential employer ?

The year starts on October 1st.

The regular number of visas (H1) distributed is 65,000 a year. Howver, after the quotas was reached a few years ago in May instead of September 30th, they decided (lenghty procedure throught the House of Senate etc..) to increase it.

The latest news can be found on the web at:

http://www.maggio-kattar.com/

check the immigration hot topic on the left of the frame. There are fears that again this year the quota will be reached before May this time!

Therefore, some people might well stay out of work (and out of the States) between May and October 1st (they will have to wait untill October 1st to get an H1-B visa).

I hope this helps.

This is matter that should be of interest no only to non US citizens applying for a job in the US in CFD but also to all the US CFD company who are hiring non US citizens.

Bonne chance !

Patrick

You can get a Green Card in about six months if you have at least two research publication work published in well respected journal. There is a quota which implies that if you can convince INS that you are doing something in U.S.A. that has to do something with national interest of U.S.A. then you qualify to apply. Cornell University is a very well reputated school in U.S.A. Wish you best of luck!

(1). I think, you could be right. (2). Since Elian did not publish a single paper here, so the government is sending him back to his father. (3). Since what Elian is doing is just enjoy life in the free world, it is hardly qualified for something of national interest. (4). Poor Elian, somebody should have told him to land at Cornell University. (5).I am sure that he didn't know how to get on the cfd-forum. At his age, it is possible to surf the Internet, especially he knows how to survive in the big ocean. (6). Do you know that President Lee got his PhD at Conell University? He was very lucky, I think, he didn't publish more than two papers. Otherwise, he will be doing "number-crunching" somewhere for a living. (7). "To stay or not to stay", that's the point of debate. I just wonder, why couldn't somebody just say that Elian disappeared in the Miami beach, and is likely eaten by an aligator. Then the story ends. (8). At least, I think, Elian must have learned a lot about CFD in order to stay alive in the ocean.

John, it seems like you are pulling my legs. Elian Gonzalez's situation is totally different issue from H1B candidates. The question was only related to job employment problems of international candidates in U.S.A.

(1). Yes, you are right. I've just learned that H1B visa is for foreign nationals with at least B.S. degrees, and will be working for US employers as temporary worker for up to three years. (2). So, under this condition, H1B is not applicable in the Elian's case. (3). So, it looks like that the specific need from the US employer is the key to the H1B visa. The ability to write a couple of papers may not be the key requirement, unless the job requirement also includes report writing. So, as long as the yearly quota (from October 1st 1999) is not filled, it shoudn't be a problem. Still it is a good idea for employer to send in application as early as possible. Am I right?

Publishing research papers (that have high merit in scientific research) in well respected journal is not an easy task. I am talking about the people with questionable mind and creative problem solving ability. There are always provisions for these kind of people. But H1B eligibility for maximum six years does not necessarily mean the candidate is eligible for permanent residency or green card even if the candidate has labor approval. INS finally decides whether the candidate's employment is somehow related to national interest of U.S.A. I think we should stop here and discuss about CFD only.
