CFD Online Discussion Forums - MSc Computational Fluid Dynamics

Hello guys,

I’m thinking about doing a MSc in cfd. My main option is the Computational Fluid Dynamics MSc from Cranfield, I have read very good things about this program in this forum.

First of all, a brief intro about my studies and experience:

I’m a Mechanical engineer specialized mainly in nuclear engineering and thermal/fluids engineering (5-year degree). I have worked for 3 years in the nuclear industry (using a lot of software related to radiation transport, but I have very little experience with fluids/thermal-hydraulics). So, even though I have a strong theoretical foundation in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, etc. and I am accustomed to use software for numerical simulations in engineering, I have almost no experience doing cfd (or thermohydraulics for that matter) calculations/computer simulations.

However, lately I have picked an interest in this field, and would like to specialize in it. I want to apply CFD for industry calculations, I don’t want a research-oriented masters.

With that out of the way, if someone could help me by answering some of the following questions I would greatly appreciate it:

- What’s your opinion/experience with Cranfield’s Msc?. I have read mainly good things. However, I contacted one of the students from a recent course and he told me that it is not what it used to be, all the good teachers went to other universities and the ones remaining are not really that good and don’t really care about students. Anyone coursed this master in the last couple of years and can give me your opinion?

- Would you recommend me other programs instead of this one? (I know Imperial college and Southampton have related programs).

- Do you think that in order to do this master I should have some knowledge of CFD, or some practice using thermalhydraulics software? or is it enough with the knowledge I have?
