Hi,
I’m quite new into CAE and would really appreciate some guidance in the topic. I still cannot make total sense of the different methods, and I am trying to get a helicopter view. I understand that you have FEM and CFD as to computational solutions. And then we have different verticals (If that is the right word), such as: Electronics (low/high frequency). Mechanical side (Structural mechanical, fluid mechanical) etc. etc. How does FEM and CFD relate to those verticals? I know that you use FEM in electronics, but can you also use CFD in electronics? Basically, I’m trying to get an overview of CAE and would appreciate if someone could guide me through the jungle. Much appreciated! |

A helpful place to start is looking at what CFD stands for: Computational Fluid Dynamics. Therefor, CFD is for fluid simulation.
Finite Element Method (FEM), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), Finite Difference Method (FDM), Finite Volume Method (FVM), and so on are all specific methods of solving problems. These methods are not specific to one specific field, as they can be reformulated for other topics. Each one does have advantages/disadvantages that are essential to understand before creating a solver. |
