Software suggestion for simulating detonation of H2/air mixture

I'm thinking to simulate RDE engine but it apears to me that using fluent to do this job would take more time (probably I must write UDF, am I right?). Anyway to do this quicker? |
I can suggest CONVERGE software, there is also a dedicated section on this forum.
However, simulating an engine is not easy especially if you want to include combustion. I think Converge can speed up the process anyway, its main capabilities include: - automatic meshing - detailed chemistry solver available (you have to provide reaction meshanism) - automatic meshing refinement - fast transient solver Hope that could help! One of my friend works on gas turbine design(I know it is not the same thing with RDE). One of his work is simulating flaming and combustion in combustion chamber with supersonic/hypersonic speeds. He was using Star-CCM+ for that job and it seemed to me easy and fast. It seems like you can do what you need with the same program. Best regards, mtaskin |

Your question is very vague... What do you want to simulate exactly? And what does this rde look like?
I know someone who was completely Fluent illiterate and learned to simulate an rde (also h2/air) in one afternoon. In this case the rde was a simple annulus, the simple geometry made it easy to setup quickly. It would probably be even faster using Star-CCM due to the all-in-one interface. |

I see. Well it's doable in Fluent.
You will of course need a premixed combustion model if you are not brute forcing the chemistry. You also need some chemkin files for the reaction mechanism. Once you have the chemkin files, I suggest you dive right into it and generate the geoemtry and mesh. If you've never used Fluent before, find a friend who has (I was the friend) and you can set it up quickly. Sorry I don't know how they feel about being contacted. You are welcome to stalk my network of peers to figure it out on your own. There are only 2-3 places in the USA that do real work on RDE's. |
I think Fluent has a chemkin file for doing combustion simulation. Isn't it enough? Also, something isn't clear to me. e.g. how to inject mixed air-fuel from the inlet? or What would be the boundary condition?
