I am a University student studying Marine Engineering. I have been using CFX 5.3 for very minor work, and would like to know from people in the industry how powerful a tool CFD is and where they think it will head in the future.

In my personal opinion, For the CFD analysis of Marine field.

I would like to recommend the commercial CFD code like the STAR-CD or commet.

Several industries use these codes for the marine CFD.
