Is it possible to simulate trapping of a large particle
 
Hi all,
first post here, so I hope I'm in the right place.
I want to simulate the trapping of a large particle (200um), in a microfluidic 'trap', which has a large inlet and a mesh outlet. once trapped it would impinge some of the flow, and the general delta P should rise across the 'trap cell'.

I'm a CFD novice, but I have some experience with structure-fluid interaction CFD, and I know it's a major PIA.

In this case, the particle (ideally particles) is free-floating, so the fluid domain should be quite flexible (not even sure if it's possible)

What is the opinion of the experts on this problem, and whether you think there might be some simplifying assumptions to be made?

Which software are you using?

Usually I believe DEM model should be able to do so if the shape is fixed.

Hi,
Well the shape is kinda soft (bio-material), but I can assume it's quite fixed for this purpose.

The programs I have access to are COMSOL, and Simulia XFLOW.
but if there is some program that is super useful for it, I can maybe try to et a demo as well.

Actually you could it in Wildkatze too using immersed boundary method.

Only thing missing is to calculate the force on the body and then based on it the movement. If you can share the geometry and conditions i could give it a try in Wildkatze. Off course then i will also add the pressure interpolation to immersed boundary surface and its motion.

Ps: Someone is using Wildkatze for microchannel flows so we are actually working on it. Also adding extended navier stokes for micro-channel flows currently. (should be available in May end version).
