Rotor-Stator cavities - cfd

Two compressor rotor-stator cavities are given in attachment. The flow direction of the air in the compressor is also indicated by the arrow.
Can you explain the flow and physical effects in these cavities? For example:
Where does the flow enter and exit the cavities?
What is the characteristic of the flow in the cavity? Ex. Is there a circulation or does the flow proceed uniformly inside the cavity? If circulation is happening, in what direction?
What is the element circled in red and its function?
If you wanted to model the flow here in CFD, what setup would you set up, e.g. What would be the entrance-exit boundary conditions, the boundary conditions to be used on the wall, the turbulence model? Is it necessary to model heat transfer on the wall?
