MHD generator

hi has anyone here worked on electrical power generation magnetohydrodynamic or know of any good references for MHD channels ? thanks

Re: MHD generator

Hi,

The only references that I know about MHD dynamos are in Astrophysics. Dynamos proceed in stars, in disks of ionized gas around stars or in the Galaxy and even in the earth. Let me know if you would be interested in these. There is a bunch of papers that has been published in the Astrophysical (Astronomical) litterature by Parker (who must be pretty old now), from the University of Chicago. All these are theoretical works. There might be some lab experiments too mentioned in these references.

I don't know of any applications for power generations in the Industry, etc...

Let me know if that could help and I'll write here the refs.

Cheers, Patrick Godon

Re: MHD generator

I am aware that some applications have been discussed and that some demonstration units have been built. I do not know if there have been any commercial installations, and I also don't know how sucessful the technology has been.

My understanding is that the gaseous combustion products coming from the burner in a typical conventional power plant are highly ionized. The idea was to put an MDH generator around the inlet section of the exhaust stack to take advantage of the polarized, moving gas to generate current.

Re: MHD generator

I think the following book provide good information on the subject. I remember that the book mentioned research in the 1960's that used a rocket engine to generate 32MW of electricity, of which 8MW was used to drive the magnets. Some physics and mathematical models, as well as configurations are discussed.

Author: Messerle, Hugo K. Title: Magnetohydrodynamic electrical power generation Publisher: Chichester : Wiley, 1995.
