I think that it is about time to start focusing this forum on CFD instead of personal vendettas. The recent flame-wars related to the postings by John C. Chien have reached a limit where I feel that it is time for me to do something about it. Many people have also contacted me by email and asked me to step in.

I would like to ask everyone to stop respoding to these flames. From now on I will moderate and delete postings that are out of line. I have already deleted a bunch of messages from John that were all exactly the same message and didn't have anything to do with CFD.

While there can be no second thought in devoting the forum for CFD discussions,a person like John.C.Chien's views on some general matters like the anthrax may also be entertained within a certain limit as long as he is able to relate such things with CFD.I hope this mail will be spared by Jonas.Regards.

Dear All

I feel that only technical matters should be discussed and nothing related to personal matter should find place.Even though this may curtail freedom of expression but this may not wean away experts from giving the answers.Hope all take this in positive sprits.

Hi,

I agree....I feel it is important to hear JOhn's opinion's on issues....as peple involved in CFD....scientists or engineers or both.....I feel that we are obligated to look into issues which may seem outside the dfefinition of CFD, but are, in my opinion part of its scientific nature. A true scientist sees no bounds, so I feel we should support John (and thers) in their comments, and not let the issues become vendetta's. Thanks for reading another non-CFD message.....actually, I think it is important that we, the users, have an input into what the forum encompasses...I see that Jonas does too...good.

I think one should keep a focus on what is already a large topic. I think it would be best to make an CFD opinions forum to keep unrelated issues out of say a question from someone looking for help. It must be quite irritating to the poster when the topic changes from unstructured grids to some ridiculous philosophical question and the original question gets lost.

Personally, I come to this forum to learn or share something technical. Its getting very annoying to me trying to "weed out" the off topic posts.

I guess if people stop seeing this forum as a place to learn or share technical ideas, those people will stop coming.

I think you might have a point...it is necessary to have either a single all encompassing forum or two distinct forums...namely, this forum for technical issues and a second forum for CFD opinions. HOwever, I htink the best way forward would be to allow the posting of all messages on a single page, but a marker to be placed beside those messages which are not directly related to a specific issue. Therefore, the individual user has the option to skip "irrelevant" messages. Of course, the temptation to read everything would be quiet strong! Jonas, could you tell us what your opinion on a seperate forum embedded in this "main forum" thread?

I share the concerns raised in recent issues which have NO logical basis within CFD. I also strongly believe in free speech but in appropriate contexts. The general forum discussion is just that, covering technicalites and points of specific origin to more open threads on developments, research and commercial uses of packages of sponsoring CFD companies. The forum can be open to abuse and misuse-but in general the present structure and monitoring meets most forum users requirements. Rather than spoil the good efforts of Jonas etc -just apply commonsense and help make the forum an international CFD interest benefitting those with genuine interests.

This forum should be able to host both technical discussions and more philisophical CFD related discussions.

I don't think that the problems we've seen here lately are caused by the topics discussed here - the problems are caused by missunderstandings and people expressing themselves without care (not necessarily with a bad intention). If we just try to be extra careful with how we say things and do our best to keep a friendly atmosphere here I'm sure that there will be no need for a separate "political" forum.

I hope that we can keep this train on track from now on.

I think that different countries/continents/religion mean different senses of humor. What I think might make you smile, could make someone from Asia cry. This should everyone take in mind before posting whatsoever.

Perhaps Jonus should take a leaf out of Voltaire's book?

Let's not confuse freedom to do/say something with anarchy. Freedom of expression in the context of the CFD forum implies that you are free to express your opinion on CFD-related questions/subjects. That is, your view of, say, what method is better for a particular problem may not be censored just because it is not the popular view. However, if your answer is not directly related to the question and goes off to a tangent to usually cause "disorder", that is no longer equal to freedom of speech. One's freedom ends when it affects someone else's. If one wants "absolute" freedom (anarchy) then one should lock themselves in isolation and exercise that "right" ad infinitum ...

I have followed the discussions in this forum closely and with interest for 2 years and I fully support the action taken by Jonas.

In my opinion, this forum should serve as a place to post a technical question, not as a place to share dispensable personal philosophic thoughs.
