Default Velocity and turbulence measurements for a pipe

Dear All,

I am new to CFD so I thought I would start with a relatively simple case - a straight pipe flowing full of water with turbulent flow. I have managed to obtain a solution, but I want to know if it is correct. I have compared the velocity profile through the cross section with the one seventh power law and it gives a good result. Is there any checks for turbulence, or further ones for velocity that anyone would recommend?

Thanks in advance, John

The pressure drop should be checked or alternatively the wall friction factor. The turbulence profiles can be checked after normalising with the friction velocity and the pipe diameter. The required data can be found in the classic text books 'Boundary Layer Theory' by H.Schlichting and 'Turbulence' by J.Hinze. Note that in general the power-law index n depends on Reynolds number, and so the universal velocity distribution law is often used (again see Schlichting and Hinze).
