what are the main theories behind then and under what circumstances are they useful???

Re: TVD SCHEME explanation

there is a full theoretical explanation in Toro's book. try to read chapters 13, 14. the book is:

Riemann Solvers and Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics

Re: TVD SCHEME explanation

Culbert Laney's Textbook, Computational Gasdynamics gives an excellent overview of total variance diminishing (TVD) schemes. It is an excellent text book for high speed gas flows.
