Default Non-commercial CFD codes

Hi everybody,

this is my first post to this forum, so I guess I should introduce myself a bit! ;-)

I've studied mathematics at Bonn university and did my diploma back in 1997. After that, I did some research for my PhD (with Prof. Noelle) on genuinely multi-d schemes for Euler equations and magnetohydrodynamics. After my PhD, I joined Bayer AG in 2000, where I work in a group that does a real lot of CFD. I've had a lot of experience with developing CFD software, and for my work, I mainly use CFX4.

In our projects, we have to deal with a large scale of physical models: Turbulence, multi-phase, chemical reactions, heat transfer, moving 3d geometries, non-Newtonian fluids, free surface problems, to name just a few. Needless to say that there is no such a thing as a single code that can cover all of this effectively.

For special projects, we're looking for some non-commercial CFD-codes that we could use in such situations. Right now I'm doing a screening of available special purpose codes. If you, your professor, your colleagues or whoever was or still is developing a Navier-Stokes code with one or another of the aforementioned applications, please let me know. The code should be 3d and a turbulence model should be available, as a minimum requirement.

Thanks a real lot for your replies in advance,

Chris

Are you requesting access to non-commercial codes to be used in a commercial environment? (i.e. something that is expressly forbidden by the licenses of a large amount of freely distributed source code that comes out of research labs) or have I misunderstood your position.

Hi Andy,

no, I'm of course not interested in violating licenses of codes. What I'm looking for is university codes that we could use -- yes -- in a commercial environment, but of course not without the explicit permission to use it. Anyway, we need the university support anyway since code adaptation and development is not our main focus.

To (hopefully) clarify things a bit more: We're looking for specialized codes that do not cover a whole set of areas, but just a few with a higher degree of flexibility, accuracy, performance, and extensibility.

Thanks for asking this important question!

Chris

Hi! If you are interested in multiphysics look at UG: http://cox.iwr.uni-heidelberg.de/~ug/ http://www.iwr.uni-heidelberg.de/groups/techsim/ und alles drum herum, George.

Sehr geehrte Christian,

This is an interesting issue and many companies here in Brazil have come to the same conclusion. I´m a PhD student and my work is to do a LES of a hydrocyclone. I´ve attempted to use a number of commercial solvers in my work, but each one displayed at least one disadvantage that prevented it from being used. So I decided to develop my own code (which took me some precious time) and actually I believe that was the best decision. Right now, I´m quite busy because I´m defending my thesis in Feb 2003, but I´d like to keep in touch with you. I´m constantly working on CFD software, and we might try to develop solutions for your problems (if you´re interested in my cooperation, of course). For a glance at my work, please visit my homepage: www.geocities.com/chicao99br

Mit herzlichen Gruessen,

Francisco José de Souza PhD student.
