Default AutoCAD and CFD?

Anybody have any experience with exporting drawings from AutoCAD into a CFD package, specifically CFX software. A co-worker had done this and said he had a problem with the block structure when he imported the file. Any suggestions or comments? Thanks

Mark

Pointwise Inc. has a pruduct that can generate grids from AutoCAD into CFD package. The software is named Gridgen. I have attended a seminar of this software. It seems very good.

Please visit their website. http://www.pointwise.com/

Fluent Inc. has released a highly flexible CFD-preprocessor named GAMBIT. This software is based on the same geometry kernel as AutoCAD ('ACIS'), thus allowing direct and faultless exchange of CAD-data. Get more info from www.fluent.com.

Gambit seems nice, I have been playing around with it a bit for the last few weeks. However, this first version has a very annoying tendency to crash with an "Exception" error leaving you with only one alternative - to quit gambit. Once it even happened to me that the whole case got corrupted and as soon as I tried to load it gambit crashed with an exception error - not very fun if you have been working on the model for a few weeks and you have to start from scratch. I don't know if this is a general problem or something only related to our installation though (I'm running on an HP J2240, 2GB ram, fx-4 graphics). Any comments?

To say something nice also - I'm very impressed by the new coupled compressible solver in Fluent 5.0. Much better than the old rampant solver! - stable, fast, lots of turbulence models, user friendly, ... haven't investigate accuracy in detail yet though. Have so far been using it mainly for simulations of external flows around high-angle-of-attack aircraft configurations.

Jonas,

You must be using the 1.0.0 or 1.0.1 release. We found and fixed a few problems that have dramatically improved Gambit's stability. Please download the latest version from

ftp://ftp.fluent.com/Fluent/gambit/download/hp.tar.gz

Make a backup copy of your current release, then install this directly on top of the old one.

The above only updates your core executables. If you have the bandwidth, also download and install

ftp://ftp.fluent.com/Fluent/gambit/d.../common.tar.gz

which contains updated shell scripts, defect lists, and other platform-independent files. If you wish to install this update in a different location than your original, you'll also need

ftp://ftp.fluent.com/Fluent/gambit/d...hp_acis.tar.gz

If you need other platforms, replace "hp" above with "sgi", "sol" (Sun Solaris), "ibm", or "dec", as appropriate.

The Windows NT version is available in a single archive at

ftp://ftp.fluent.com/Fluent/gambit/download/gambit.zip

After extracting the .zip file, run gambit1.0\ntx86\setup.exe.

Best regards, Scott Gilmore Fluent Inc.

Wow, this is great user support, much better than I got on the phone from Fluent's support ;-) I am indeed using gambit version 1.0.0. I will download the new version when I get back to the office tomorrow and report back here if this solves my problems. Thanks Scott!

I have now downloaded and tried gambit 1.0.3 and I'm sorry to report that also this version has a tendency to crash quite often - several times a day if you use it full time. However, when it works it seems to be a great tool. Could save us a lot of time once you get it stable.

Jonas,

I am surprised and troubled by the frequent crashes you are reporting. If you would please send your Gambit journal files to your local Fluent office, we'll investigate right away. Please also indicate to them which platform you are using, as this could be important. For example, we recently discovered bugs in malloc() on the DEC Alpha platform when shared libraries are being used. We are switching to a statically-linked executable on the DEC Alpha platform to work around those problems, and this appears to have dramatically improved stability on that platform.

Regards, Scott Gilmore Fluent Inc.

Yes, we will contact our local fluent office about this. FYI we are running on HP J2240 machines (2 processors, 2GB ram, fx-4 graphics, HP-UX 10.20). The last bug we discovered was that if you print a grid the vertices are not aligned with the lines connecting them. This problem is probably not platfrom dependent (should affect all postscript printers), but the crashes might well be. Thanks for your response!
