Although my study field is not CFD, trying to simulate now the flow inside a piston-cylinder. I guess I have an unsteady and moving boundary case. How can I model and solve such a situation?Any experience and ideas are highly appreciated. Thanks much,

I am working on a project with moving piston. If you have a commercial code in hand , it is easy; if using your own code , amy be diffcult

Go to the University of Wisconsin web site, then look around on the engineering pages (probably mechanical, maybe chemical?) for KIVA. That's a code developed at Los Alamos for engine simulations. The U of W has done a lot of development on the code and modeling with it. Someone there should be able to tell you more about how to get it or benefit from their development.

Or do a Google search on "KIVA". You may get some hits on religious rituals of the Native Americans in the Southwest as well.

1. Haworth and Jansen (piston cylinder in IC engine) 2. Fadlun, Verzicco et al. (JCP paper...LES with immersed boundary technique to take care of the moving piston)

Hope it helps....In case, you fail to find these papers with the given detail...I'll post the detailed reference with journal title and date of publication (I don't have it handy now).

Hi babyface ...We have CFD2000 here... Do not know how to solve an unsteady flow with moving boundary conditions. Trying to simulate a flow in a cylinder while the piston moves up& down. Do you have any suggestions that I should start with?
