I think the best case for the validation is a channel flow. Moin & Kim (1982) in JFM is a good reference paper for this.

if u want use wall functions u don't have to bother much about resolving of flow at wall. dynamic models also provide damping behaviour at walls.

without wall functions y+ is 1. and resolving like this mean u will have problems especially with LES.
