Shear strain rate(Sij)

Hello there

When Shear strain rate(Sij) is plotted in Fluent it is shown as a scalar field. What contraction of the tensor is used to get this shear strain rate as a scalar.

This should be the strain rate magnitude, given as:

sqrt(2*S_ij*S_ij)

Yes, the product of the strain rate tensor with itself.

The general convention is Shear strain rate tensor, S = [Sij] Magnitude = S:S = sqrt(Sij*Sij)
