FEM vs. Mixed-FEM

Dear all,
This is my first post in this forum! which i think its a great place to share knowledge with scientists. My question is, could some please explain the diffrence between Finite Element Method (FEM) and Mixed-Finite Element Method (Mixed-FEM)? I have been researching FEM to use in reservoir simulation. And heard that a better method is Mixed-FEM becuase it gives a better conservation of mass for Flow dynamics (FD) problem. could someone kindly give the advantages and disadvantages of each for FD problems. thanx in advance.
