Can turbuence model predict Relaminarization?

Default Can turbuence model predict Relaminarization?

Hi every one,

Now, I'm interested in relaminalization (turbulent to laminar)phenomena, which is due to strong flow accelalation. Does anyone know the turbulence model , which can predict relaminarization process? Both Rans or LES dynamic model are welcome. Please tell me some paper or information.

Ideally a LES with an adaptive filter should be able to predict relaminarization but in practice I don't any model can do even an adequate job in all circumstances.

Relaminaritation with RANS usually requires some theoretical-empirical correlations. For low pressure gas turbine blades, Abu-Ghannam and Shaw criterium with some other corrections is a standard tool. Some turbulence models (Spalart-Allmaras and Menter) have shown to be promising techniques, but it seems to me that much work is to be done yet.

Try B. Perot's turbulent potential model. They have a paper in JOT, you can search it.

Low Re models with apropriate damping functions can predict laminarization. One interesting source is:

The prediction of laminarization with a two-equation model of turbulence

W.P. Jones and B.E. Launder

Int. Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer vol. 15 pp 301-314 1972

This paper, although old, deals with laminarization of a turbulent boundary layer due to strong acceleration. I hope that it helps you.

Hi,

The Jones-Launder TM makes a very questionable job of predicting re-laminarization. I would stick to work by e.g. Menter. I atended a conference last year ETMM5 in Mallorca, where Menter presented his latest findings, which sounded promising.
