Hi,

Can anyone post some references that show how to calculate all the geometry terms, such as cell center, cell volume, face normal, cell face area...?

I am planning to use Finite Volume colocated hex cells. Thanks!

hi paul,

a review of vector calculus with geometrical interpretation will help you to calculate the geometry parameters mentioned by you.

for instance (a*b)/|(a*b)| will give you the normal of a face with a and b as its adjacent side vector.

similarly you can find formulas for other quantities.

Thanks for the reply.

When dealing with FV with colocated cell-centered grid, there are many terms that are needed. Some are simple and some are tedious. For example, these are some of the terms needed: cell center, cell volume, face area, normal vector of the face, intersection point of face and the vector connecting the two cell centers.

Are there books or subroutines (numerical recipe?) that discuss the calculations of all these terms?

Take a look to the book: Computational Methods for Fluid Dynamics, Joel Ferziger and Milovan Peric, Springer, 2002.

There is a lot of (very) valuable information about setting FV methods using colocated variable arrangements. Among other, you will also find mesh topology independent formulas for cell center, volumes, face area calculations.

Have fun...

Hi

I hope you find your the solution the two following books: Hirsch, C., 1988, "Numerical Computation of Internal and external Flows; Volume 1, Fundamentals of Numerical Discretization", John Wiley & Sons, Chichester, UK. Tannehill, J.C., Anderson, D.A. and Pletcher, R.H., 1997, "Computational Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer", 2nd ed., Taylor & Francis, Washington, DC.
