Hi,

Im doing research on combustion, specially in gasification.

I was wondering if you could point me towards a good suite for modeling. The goal is to model a fixed bed gasifier with air entering at the center of the equipment. The solver has to deal with two phases, solid and gas.

My options are OpenFOAM, Fluent (it is in the school) and ANSYS CFX (I think they want to buy a license).

My doubts are regarding solid movement. I dont know which solver can model that.

AAAhh, another thing, in theory, my supervisor wants to attach a simple controller to the code (a PID controller). Which of these options is suitable for the addition of a control scheme (if possible).

Thanks.

There is another software called mfix which can be used. The only problem with mfix is the particle motion is not MPI ready. Regarding your options, it depends what is the goal of your project. If you are fine with the chemistry models available with Fluent then you should go wit it. If you need to write some models of your own, OpenFOAM is a much better option.
