Linux CFD n00b

I really need some help.

I'm running a 32bit Linux Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty i386 system. I want to do some CFD analysis. And i want to use open source and/or free software. I have been looking all over the place for resources and i've hit my last nerve. I tried installing OpenFOAM but it keeps erroring, and i installed ParaView but it appears that its only for viewing a CFD model that's already been solved.

Can someone give me some steps for setting up my system with everything i need to design the model, mesh it, set up boundaries and properties, run the analysis, and analyse it (and whatever other steps in between)?

For example which software(s) should i install to get all this accomplished?

any input at all will be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Hello,

I think you can find a lot of free CFD codes on the Internet that will run on your Linux box:

OpenFoam (try to search for a compiled version if you are a Linux newbie, do not start by building from scratch).

NSC2KE - this old Fortran code should compile without a problem on your Ubuntu.

Also Fluent 6.3 works perfectly on Ubuntu 9.04 (however this is a commercial solution).

I have been using openfoam on Ubuntu without any problems. Building paraview might be a hassle but you can use the foamToVTK utility to export your data into VTK format and view it in paraview. As long as you have gcc installed or you use the gcc which comes with openfoam it should not be hard to compile.
