how to model transition laminar to turbulent?

Default how to model transition laminar to turbulent?

Example flow over a flat plate , flow which is laminar ,uniform enter a plate at some distance a flow become turbulent. which method and turbulent model should be used to predict this length?

And am i correct if i use a turbulent kinetic energy to declare the transition position?
