Best front tracking method for surface evaporation

Hi All,

I have been looking for a good (best) method for tracking the front in the liquid evaporation application for a while but not yet found. Actually, I would like to simulate the melt pool in the laser beam (keyhole penetration) welding process using FEM. Therefore, the interface between the liquid (molten material) and vapour (evaporated liquid) in the created keyhole must be traced. According to my research, VOF and level set method are two main approaches commonly used in the fixed grid method. However, I also found that some suggest using another method called "phase field" suitable for evaporation applications. Could anyone here give me an advice which method I should employ, how it is suitable to my case and if possible the list of literatures related to such a method.

Thanks in advance
