I'm getting started on a fluid structure interaction problem and I wanted some clarification on one area. The loads transferred from the fluid part to the structural part are the static pressures correct?

I think it is the static pressure that is normal to the structure and when the force is tangential to the structure, it is shear. I am not a master and just want to join in the discussion.

Not just so. The shear stress also plays an important role for low Reynolds flow. I am doing the FSI work.

Actually, you should prescribe the traction vector, Ti, at the surfaces, which is given (in tensor notation) by Ti = Nj Sij and where Sij is the stress tensor (including the viscous part) and Nj is the normal unit vector.
