A CFL criterion is a limit based on the stability of the numerical scheme used. It Plays an important role in explicit schemes. Any book on CFD should explain it.

cfl number = u*dt/dx

It helps you to select the time step (dt) for a given grid space (dx).

actually, it limits max mesh length in order to ensure calculation stability.
