structured grids: rectangle + cylinder intersect

Hi, Can anybody suggesst me how to have 3D structured grids on the intersection of rectangle(cuboid) and cylinder. Any refrences, books will be of great help. Thanks, Amol

You don't give enough information for me to develop a mental picture of your geometry. The hexahedron and cylinder can intersect in different ways, and you don't give the shape of your elements (I presume you are using FEM). One approach is to divide the irregular problem domain into large, unstructured blocks, and to partition each block with a structured grid.

Thanks a lot Jonas. I have attached the image of my geometry at : http://www.me.unm.edu/~pamol/pic.jpeg I am trying to simulate the mixing of a jet in a crossflow. The jet is injected at the wall of the duct. I hope this will give you a better idea of the geometry. I am using FDM. Can you please let me know how to have structured grid on this.
Is there a generic way to deal with these type of geometry. Are there any refrences on this type of problems. -amol |

I don't think there is any way to do this with a single structured grid. I would break this into unstructured blocks and use a structured mesh on each block. Assemble the matrix on each block, then patch the blocks together.
I would have the cylinder extend through the box so you only need to match the grid on the surface of the cylinder. The cylinder will need perhaps five blocks: a core block surrounded by four blocks. The cylinder might be surrounded by four blocks, separated by planes running from the cylinder to the box corners/edges with a similar arrangement on the extended side. Except for the core block, each block will have one curved side. The remainder of the structure to the right is easily meshed with rectangular hexahedral blocks. This will work, but perhaps others could suggest a simpler arrangement. I hope you can follow my words. |

Thats waht i had tried earlier. I had cylinder sandwiched in two blocks of ducts. I am using gridgen. To me my method look very simple and so i was wondering wether i was neglecting some issues.
Joans you seem to have lot of experience with structured grids. Can you please suggesst me some books/papers. John i could not see that report. May be some probs in site. It will be great if you could email me the pdf file at amolp@unm.edu. Thanks a lot for your help. -Amol |

Hello,
