Smile analysis of finite element solution

Hi all

I wanted to know if the solution of an ode that is obtained by galerkin method depicts both the transient and steady state response of the system or only the steady state(particular solution) response. I was not able to find references for the same.
It would also be great if you could suggest me references on finite element in time domain.
