In the instance of an engine (cooling system), you would use 3D to design / optimize the pump, coolers, etc. You would then take the performance characteristics of the components and use them within a 1D simulation of the entire system. In a nutshell, 3D helps you design components while 1D enables you determine effects of various design changes and operating conditions across the entire system. There's a very good downloadable white paper on the integration of 1D (system-level) and 3D (component-level) in the design of a vehicle HVAC system at: http://www.flowmaster.com/landingpag...0_auto_wp.html |
