how can I install/compile gfortran 4.6 on Snow Leopard 64 bits ?

For compiling the last stable gfortran on your OSX machine follow this tutorial:

You can also use macports or fink, both of which provide a huge collection of open source softwares. They make it very easy to maintain your softwares and upgrade them.

Currently Fink has only gcc-4.5 as a prebuilt package. I've never used MacPorts so I have no opinion about this system.
