Newbie to CFD
 

I'm just learning about CFD applications and was curious as to what is the dominant operating system for CFD applications? I suspect Linux but am not sure. I was also wondering if most users run standard commercial applications (e.g. Fluent Solver) versus custom applications. Any insights would greatly be appreciated.

sooner or later everybody will turn to OpenFOAM! The open source concept is unbeatable; just like Linux :)

Hi,

CFD does to the main part _not_ mean that you spend your time fiddling around with parameters in turbulence models or waiting for the simulation to diverge.

It seems to have more to do with data conversion, reporting, interpolation, 3d-interactive data display, review of papers, papers, papers. And not to forget, working on tight time scales.

Altogether, a good CFD software is also one that perfectly integrates with your actual work. That is done, I suppose at least in a commercial context, with the help of some kind of MS Windows.

Hi,

talking about tight time scales; maybe it is better to have a perfectly adjusted system to your needs!?

And what about licence cost, especially in a commercial context?

....and very suprisingly there are as many answers to this question as there are combinations of CFD packages, operating systems and programming languages. :P
