As someone that does not use or understand the newer social media, does CFD and similar technical topics have a growing presence on these sites?

You can find a lot of CFD things on various social media sites. For an overview you can browse through this on CFD Online:

Links > Social Media & Online Communitites

This page has recently been updated so it should give you a fairly up-to-date picture.
