Hey Guys. Can anyone suggest me some undergraduate level CFD projects? CFD is becoming too interesting for me and I would really like to some kind of project suitable at undergrad level. Any kind of project suggestion is welcome..

I am doing an undergraduate project on CFD. It is not completely specified at this point, but I can tell you what I have so far.

Ultimately I would like to use CFD to study drag properties on ship hulls. I would like to run a few simulations using popular hull designs. For example, a comparison of a bathtub shaped sailboat hull (dingy) compared to a sleeker hull design like that of a 40 foot racing boat would be interesting.

Formally in school I have taken a one semester undergrad fluid dynamics course and have very limited numerical methods and programming knowledge.

I will tell you in order to fully understand CFD, there is a lot to learn. You should begin with basic theoretical fluid dynamics and the governing equations of flow. Then you will need some numerical methods and study on partial differential equations to understand the behavior of the governing equations. Numerical methods will also help, in addition to linear algebra.

I would start by versing yourself in the background information above, and talking with a professor or post doc that has CFD experience. Then I would look into a CFD program. If you had the access, you could use ANSYS, but it might be hard to come by. I don't have any experience with OpenFOAM, but it is free.

I am still very early in my studies, but I like the direction I am going with the project. It is very interesting, and the whole CFD field is mind boggling if you think about it.

CFD can be applied to many applications. The traditional ones have been aerospace and automotive industries, but it has since expanded drastically.

I would suggest you select a subject in conjunction with your supervisor/tutor/someone with a bit of experience. The subject should be of interest to you (as it helps to be motivated and to look beyond the nice pictures).

Below are a couple of ideas:
- comparison of dyson air-blade to classical hand dryer (which is going to be quite a challenging one as it not only involves air flow, but also the evaporation/stripping of water film on skin);
- a take on the ASHRAE CFD Shoot out competition (google it). Too bad registration has closed, else you could be in the run for some money. But if you hassle them enough, you might be able to get through;
- a rework on the FDA CFD Round Robin #1 to see how you travel now that there is experimental data available;
- Try to link with one of the F1 In School team to undertake some modelling.

Good luck with it. Julien

Thanks for the ideas guys but i forgot to mention by undergrad specialization. I am basically doing my undergrad in aeronautical engineering and I have access and little experience in fluent, gambit and ANSYS. So it would be helpful if anyone could suggest aeronautical applications of CFD. Thanks in advance

I suggest you to model a 3d wing in subsonic,transonic and supersonic regimes ...
and compare the effect of using the different turbulence models on result?
discuss on the cons and prons of different models?
and choose the best for any case and for each desired parameter

@morteza08
Thanks for the idea!! It seems quite possible to accomplish..the problem is i don't have that much idea about turbulence models..Well i know the different models used but i don't know them in depth..Sometimes due to inaccurate initialization my results diverge..Any idea to help me with that?

Mate there was a few shows on discovery channel about ship hull design, maybe it would interest you if you can find them.

They went through all the advanced over time eg the big bulb at the front that makes the waves down the hull less effective at sucking it backwards if u want to call it that. they use it to cancel out the normal waves etc

hey Juggz thanks for the advice. I will definitely look into that. Now I just need to figure out how to do a multi-fluid (water and air) interface in Fluent. This is about to get good.

Hi, I am a student in naval architecture. Now, I am using Fluent to calculate resistance of ship. I have some problem to use UDF to define boudary conditional. I have already setup Visual Stdio 2008, but when I load file.c in to Fluent, It is not working ok. Would you teach me how to use UDF ringht.

Thank you very much,

Hi, I am a graduate student. I study Fluent to calculate ship resistance. Now, I have some problem how to run UDF right, would you teach me. Thank you!

With undergraduate CFD project, I think that you must be chose project belong to conditions of your LAB. So that Biology simulation is very instering, simulation some kind of Fish to design a suppermaritine for example.

Have a great day!

I wish to know which books you used at the beginning and what other resources are useful
thanx
