I was wondering in everyones opinion, what is the most advanced use of LES for an engeering application?

In particular what about for gas turbine maybe with or without combustion?

How about "WEATHER PREDICTION"

Yeah, weather predictions related to fluid flow is one of the most prominent field driving LES.

is weather prediction not quite a large scale phenonemon though, i.e. it doesnt need very fine grids like you might need in as a more enginnering application???

also in weather i suppose the boundary conditions are rahter simplified. isnt it harder when we have walls and things???

Weather prediction was the first application of LES in the 1960's. See the seminal paper:

J. Smagorinsky. General circulation experiments with the primitive equations, i. the basic experiment. Monthly Weather Review, 91:99, 164, 1963.

In my opinion, it takes too long to be practical in an industry. Recent work by Chan-Moon Jang on subsonic fan for a y+ inside the sublayer took 2.5 months on a supercomp to complete.

Hi

System related to weather may have very simpler boundary or intial conditions, but the turbulence is very complicated in this system. In machines you have limited scales, which are important, but in Atmospheric sciences, almost every scale is equally important. That's why LES.

There is no 'most advanced use' of LES for engineering application. TYou may adopt the classical Smagorinsky SGS-model and the dynamic procedure. The numerical scheme must be at least of second order and the nonlinear term is well calculated. In addition, great attention should paid to mesh resolution. I use LES for some engineering design. The headache is the limitation of low Renolds number(Re~10^4). The cost is not as high as imagined. Actually you may succeed using a personal computer.
