Default Monitor Mass Flow in FINE/Marine

Hello,

I am doing a steady and transient simulation of a flow through a valve in FINE/Marine and I also have two pipes (inlet and outlet). So I have used the EXTERNAL boundary condition for both, with inlet as "Far field" with constant velocity (Vx) and outlet as "frozen pressure".

Inlet pipe diameter: 0.373 m
Outlet pipe diameter: 0.30 m
Velocity inlet in x direction: 1 m/s
Fluid: Water

My question is: how can I monitor the mass flow (inlet and outlet) during the simulation? I have checked the files produced by the solver after the simulation, but I have not find anything regarding mass flow. If it is possible using dynamic library, could anyone please help me with that? I am new using FINE/Marine.

I know it is possible to check after the simulation in CFView the inlet and outlet mass flow, but I would like to monitor during the simulation, just like in FINE/Open, for example.

Thank you in advance.

Joaquim

I wonder why you do such a simulation in Fine/Marine?

Hi Hamidzoka,

thank you for your reply. The reason why I am using FINE/Marine is because I am studying the motion of the valve and for that I would like to use overset grid approach. Since overset grid is not possible in FINE/Open, I am doing the simulation in FINE/Marine. Therefore, it is relevant in my case to monitor the mass flow during the simulation.

In case you have any idea how to help me with that, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Hello Joaquim,

FINE/Marine does not include automatic mass flow monitoring as it was not created for internal flows.

But you can monitor the mass flow by saving periodic solutions. If the computation is mono-fluid: Outputs > Probe variables > Surface data. Create two cutting planes, one near the inlet and one near the outlet with velocity saved.

Then in CFView you can compute the mass flow at inlet and outlet with an integral of the axial velocity.

All actions in CFView are saved in a python script that can be recovered in File > Macro > Save All, so you can easily script the mass flow computation.

Regards,
Anna
