Hi all,

while tiptoeing from solids4Foam tutorials towards my eventual application, I noticed that solids4Foam at times appears to have trouble with multiple materials (in my case two) at once.

Specifically, in some cases, if I define two cellZones and the corresponding entries in the mechanicalProperties dict, I will get a floating point exception error within the first time step. This even happens if the two entries in the mechanicalProperties dict are identical (apart from the name), thus practically assigning the same material to both cellZones.

On the other hand, if I delete or comment out the second material definition in mechanicalProperties, thereby assigning one single material definition to the whole mesh, the simulation converges just fine.

Nonetheless, there are numerous examples where the specification of two entries in the mechanical Properties dict, identical or different works just fine.

I would love to know what causes this behaviour, and, if possible, how to avoid it in future usage of the solver.

Thanks in advance for your help!

(I've attached a minimal working example to the post which I hope better illustrates the point for whoever is interested in taking a look at it. As said above, only by commenting/uncommenting the second entry "flap" (whose parameters identical to the first one) in the mechanicalProperties dict, the solver will switch between a converging solution and a floating point exception.)

I am using solids4Foam with foam-extend 4.1.

Hi,

no, unfortunately I haven't been able to resolve the issue. Although I must admit I haven't spent much time on it anymore since the post.

If you make any progress, I would love to hear about it!

Regards
