Thanks Dan, that worked perfectly; my validation case is yielding the correct results!

Any suggestions on meshing fins? Every time I try to increase the mesh density it starts meshing the Bounding Box but I'm trying to mesh the interior. The part is about 2 inches across.

Hi Norris, is your "Material Point" under the Mesh tab falling in the right place?

Yes, it's inside the fluid volume. I've found that re orienting the geometry has given me better results, however, it still has trouble with the thin portions on the fins. Is the snappy meshing engine dependent on geometry size or relative size (my fins are on the order of .001 inches)?

Sorry for not replying, I have been traveling around a bit. For snappy to snap and not remove the castellated mesh, there needs to be at least two cells. If there was not enough refinement in a particular region or the base mesh was too coarse....snapping will behave badly. Reduce your base mesh size and also add some refinement near the surfaces that are giving you issues.

Hi Dan,

Is there any update on adding the force calculation to the output with newer versions of Helyx-OS?

Thanks,

Jose

Yeah, you will have to do it manually since HelyxOS currently removes extra entries in the controlDict (e.g. libs( "libSomethingSomething.so" ) and function objects ) by design when you save and run a case.

Hi all,

I'm getting trouble with meshing in Helyx-os.

I what to simulate a wind - tunnel with model inside and get the efforts on the model.
Most of time it works perfectly but some times :

The mesher does not mesh the bounding box neither the fluid volume, but only the inside of my model imported in .stl (witch is water tight)

Does someone can help me to force the mesher to mesh the volume inside the bounding box and not the volume inside my 3D model ?

Thanks,

Alexis

PS : i'm using v2.1.1

@Alexis, if you want to mesh the space between your water-tight STL and your base mesh boundaries, you need to move your material point outside of your imported STL geometry. This will produce a castellated mesh of the fluid space and continue to snap and add layers (if you designated layers to be added).

Hi all,

I canīt manage to use HELYX-OS to mesh a very simple test case (straight pipe).

Some information:
OS: Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS (64-bit)
HELYX-OS: v2.2.0
OpenFOAM: v2.3.1

The test case to start with HELYX-OS is a straight pipe and I am doing the following steps:

1. Creating the stl surfaces in a CAD package -> surfaces: inlet, outlet and wall
2. Import the surfaces into HELYX -> no problem, I can see the geometry with all surfaces (pipe diameter=5cm and length=30cm)
3. Define the base mesh (automatically or user defined with a size=0.02m)
4. Define some refinements (level 1 to 2 for the surfaces and add layers for the wall e.g. 2 and 5mm thick)
5. Material Point is inside the pipe
6. Create the mesh -> blockMesh is running and produces the correct number of cells
-> snappyHexMesh stucks after "Overall mesh bounding box ...
Relative tolerance ...
Absolute matching distance ..."

I expect that the mesh should be generated in seconds. It makes no difference to do it in serial or parallel, the base mesh automatically or user defined, with or without refinements. I made no changes in the default options.

Any comment would be highly appreciated. There is probably one fundamental mistake in my setup.

Hi,

Do the mesh without layers first. If that works out, do layers as well.If not, do the base mesh with smaller elements, say 1 cm or 5 mm.

Good luck!

Hi,

I already tried without layers, but no success. Even with a smaller base mesh (5mm), it doesnīt work (or at least it takes ages, I donīt know, no mesh is generated after 15 minutes and thatīs too long in my opinion).

Are the other steps correct (e.g. the stl surfaces)? That should be the normal procedure.

Please find attached the three stl surfaces.

Thanks a lot for your help.

@Tim

This isn't a problem with HELYX-OS but a problem with the STL files that have bee exported. If you open the STLs that you uploaded you will see

Code:
 solid PRO2STL version 1.0 NULNULNULNULNULNUL
this signified that the software you're using is having some issue in exporting to the correct ASCII format. Interspersed in those NUL entries throughout the file are the actual entries. HELYX-OS is smart enough to read the file, but since the STL is directly read in standard snappyHexMesh (and not passed through HELYX-OS) then it has a problem telling what are the points to use. So, if you use the tool surfaceConvert and simply do a

Code:
surfaceConvert inlet.stl inletConverted.stl
on each geometry then you will get something like

Code:
solid zone0
 facet normal -0 0.0697566 0.997564
  outer loop
   vertex -0.15 0 0.025
   vertex 0.15 0 0.025
   vertex 0.15 0.00347933 0.0247567
  endloop
 endfacet
 facet normal -0 0.207912 0.978148
  outer loop
   vertex -0.15 0.00347933 0.0247567
   vertex 0.15 0.00347933 0.0247567
   vertex 0.15 0.00689093 0.0240315
  endloop
 endfacet
 facet normal -0 0.34202 0.939693
  outer loop
   vertex -0.15 0.00689093 0.0240315
   vertex 0.15 0.00689093 0.0240315
   vertex 0.15 0.0101684 0.0228386
  endloop
 endfacet
 facet normal -0 0.469472 0.88
Reload those new converted geometries, set them up appropriately, and then it will mesh in seconds with your suggested settings. I hope this helped.

Dan,

thatīs it. Thanks a lot. I assumed, that the issue is related to the stl files.

Hello All,

Can you please provide help with Helyx-OS for ubuntu 64 bit.

Please can anyone provide the deb package as I am unable to download it from sourceforge ( it say's page error).

My use is with open foam for air flow predicition within a building as part of my education certificate program.

Thanks

Greetings Rao and welcome to the forum!

I noticed two weeks ago that the project was missing from sourceforge.net, but I haven't managed to find the time to contact the authors. I don't know yet if they discontinued the project or if Sourceforge.net had another hardware/software issue

I'll try to send them an email to them today, if you haven't already. (edit: I've sent a PM to Daniel "chegdan" Combest.)

Best regards,
Bruno

I'd like to try Helyx-OS, but I can't find it anywhere to download. The link from the Engys website to Sourceforge is broken, I can't find find it in a search on Sourceforge and any other download links I can find on the internet seem to point to the same broken Sourceforge page.
I've tried a few times over the last couple of weeks and it's still not there, has it shut down or something?
