Hello

I recently updated to OF1606 and helyx os 2.4.0, I did find some pleasant enchantments.

But my main concern is how to create cell zones in this new version.

Until now I have been creating cylinder to cover rotating part of fluid volume.
Then defined it as internal and cell zone.
After that meshing.

Now only thing that can create cell zone without error is plane.

What im missing?????
Anyone else having a same problem?

I attached simple fan in duct picture to present this problem.

Hello jsskangas,

perhaps the image is misleading but did you place the material point correctly?

Best Regards,
RS

Hello

It is good to go trough all basics, I'm not professional in CFD.
Just using it for my own hobbies..

This time solution was not that easy.

Material point is not shown in picture and it does locate inside fluid volume.

Other ideas what to test?

We are all learning

The material point is inside the cellzone or outside but inside the fluid volume? It is different.

I have yet to understand why the cylinder is bigger than the rotating part...
Perhaps is easier if you upload the case file.

Best Regards,
RS

Hello

I did try those as well. I made cylinder smaller than flow area and moved material point inside rotating zone, as well as out side it, but still in fluid volume.

no effect still gives same error.

Where I need it to go over... well my hobby is centrifugal compressors.
When I'm simulating a compressor wheel, usually I take inlet, wheel and diffuser.
Form a air volume from these.
Then I use cylinder object to "make inlet" and second one to I use over impeller area to determine MRF area.
As impeller is not shaped like cylinder, I use bigger cylinder to cover impeller area for making cell zone.
See other picture as well.

Hello jsskangas,

From the pictures it seems you are going through the Helyx-os workflow correctly.

Could you upload your case file?

I think it would be easier to see whats going on.

Best.

Jussi,

I was able to generate a cellZone with your surfaces by doing the following:
  1. Remove the cylinders that you are using for inlet and outlet patches
  2. Use the base mesh to create the inlet and outlet patches. do this by shrinking the base mesh to be slightly inside your tube and then rename the ffminz and ffmaxz to outlet and inlet. During meshing the new patches will be created. You can also do this the way you are doing, I just did it slightly differently in this case.
  3. increase your levels on the propelli patches to actually refine, you need to refine on surfaces to get a mesh created. I used a min of 1 and max of 2.
  4. move the material point out of the cellZone and into the fluid region

In this test case you may want to separate out your impeller and your walls since the MRF model will need to treat non-moving walls in an MRF zone a little differently (unless you want those walls to move too)

Hello

Thanks but not possible to do that in my project.
This blower in a duct was just quick and small example to demonstrate this problem.

In my real cases I can not always use it that way.

I think this could be a bug on Helyx-os.

Ah ok, those were just some suggestions. I re-downloaded your case, loaded it in HELYX OS and just pressed mesh and created a mesh with an MRF region. From that I'd say it's not a bug in HELYX-OS. I can't reproduce the issue with your current test case.

What version of helys-os you are using?

It works fine with older version, but we are now talking with 2.4.0 version of helyx-os and OF1606+.

I'm using HELYX-OS version 2.4.0 and OpenFOAM 4 from the Ubuntu repository.

Hello

Could anyone test my setup with helyx-os 2.4.0 ans OF1606+.
with my setup will it give same error?

Then I could revert back to OpenFoam 4.0 if meshing works with that properly.

This is a bug in 1606 snappyHexMesh dealing with an additional method zones are detected/set. The old method, user specified faceTypes and cellZone names (which you are using). The new alternative method uses an additional list of points and zone names.
