Installing OpenFoam on windows 7-64
 

Dear OF community,

Lately I started working in a CFD company and they want me to instal OpenFoam (on my computer and/or server).

I already work on OpenFoam for another company but I never had to deal with the installation.

Can someone please help me (Ideally step by step) to do it or redirect me toward a website that explains how we can do.

Well, installing OpenFOAM on Windows is not officially supported. AFAIK, there are at least 2 possible solutions:

1. Rely on virtualization and install a Linux distribution inside a virtual machine. For that, you should be able to find some tutorials on how to do this with VirtualBox or VMPlayer.
   Once you have the Linux distribution up and running, have a look at this wiki page: http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/Installation/Linux
2. Rely on a non-official port of OpenFOAM for Windows. You can find more information about this here:

First of all, thank you for your reply.
To have all memory available to OpenFOAM, I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my computer so I can install OpenFOAM 2.2.2.
On the official web site there are all the instructions to install OpenFOAM 2.2.2. The thing that I need right now is how to install Ubuntu and what is the best Ubuntu version for OpenFOAM?

Sorry for the late reply.

It really depends on how frequently you're willing to upgrade your Ubuntu installation.
If you don't want to have to upgrade every 6 months, then Ubuntu 12.04 is the latest Long Term Support (LTS) version, which will be supported for a couple more years.
The next LTS will be 14.04, which should be released on April 2014 and will be supported for... let me find the page that explains this... here you go: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LTS

Keep in mind that you should always update, but not necessarily always upgrade ;)

I did as you said and now it's working :)
I just have a problem to launch Paraview, when I write paraview on the Terminal, it opens it but I have this errors :

Hi Dadou,

My guess is that you have not yet installed the graphics card drivers in your Ubuntu installation.
I'm assuming here that you have installed Ubuntu 12.04 in a real machine and not in a virtual machine.

Could you give me a suggestion regarding Open FOAM on Windows, I want to do some serious turbomachinery simulations and I am not sure about performance of Open FOAM on windows !!

I remember having the same problem. I tried with ubuntu 36 and it worked but then I uninstalled everything and did it again and it worked

Plz, is it a must I install OpenFOAM in the DOS environment?

OpenFOAM is designed to work from the command line, no matter which Operating System it's working on.
