Hi, I have built OF from source on an amazon EC2 instance. Because space is quite precious I wonder what are the files that I need to keep in order to have a functioning installation.

I have followed the standard instructions to build from source so my installation tree looks like this (from ~):

OpenFOAM/
├── OpenFOAM-2.4.0
│** ├── Allwmake
│** ├── applications
│** ├── bin
│** ├── COPYING
│** ├── doc
│** ├── etc
│** ├── platforms
│** ├── README.html
│** ├── README.org
│** ├── src
│** ├── tutorials
│** └── wmake
├── ThirdParty-2.4.0
│** ├── Allclean
│** ├── Allwmake
│** ├── AllwmakeLibccmio
│** ├── build
│** ├── CGAL-4.6
│** ├── cmake-2.8.12.1
│** ├── etc
│** ├── makeCGAL
│** ├── makeCmake
│** ├── makeGcc
│** ├── makeLLVM
│** ├── makeParaView
│** ├── makeParaView4
│** ├── makeQt
│** ├── openmpi-1.8.5
│** ├── ParaView-4.1.0
│** ├── platforms
│** ├── README.html
│** ├── README.org
│** └── scotch_6.0.3
└── ubuntu-2.4.0
├── platforms
├── run
└── swak4Foam

My guess is that ThirdParty-2.4.0 can be deleted and so all the docs and tutorials. But can I get rid of all the sources?

The idea is to create an image that is used only for the calculation and uses the minimum amount of space.

Thanks

If space is so small that the installation itself is problematic, you're going to run into serious problems trying to store any sizable CFD solution data set.

Quick answer: If you no longer need to build anything at all from source code, then you only need 5 folders:
  • OpenFOAM-*
    • bin
    • etc
    • platforms
  • ThirdParty-*
    • platforms
  • username-*
    • platforms
cutter, Rojj and macelee like this.

Thanks Bruno. That's what I needed.

@kmooney
I will keep that in mind. At the moment my files are not very big as I am in development. Practically I run the case, sample a few points, download the results and delete the case.
