The_Kaiser is on a distinguished road
Hi,

After using during my whole studies CFD-Programms with a GUI I know wanted to learn OpenFOAM. I Installed Ubuntu 16.04 and OpenFOAM+ 1606 using this guide:
http://www.openfoam.com/download/install-binary.php

After starting OpenFOAM, the Programm itself works fine (tutorial cases). But the look of my terminal changes (the name of PC changes in user@PC) and I cant use the programms I have installed on Ubuntu (for example "gedit" doesn’t work anymore
"bash: gedit: command not found").

Can anybody help me? I tried to find a matching thread or sth on the internet, but I couldn't.

Thanks for your help in advance

Quick answer: Once you get access inside the OpenFOAM+ docker, it only gives you access to the applications that are installed inside the container, which has a minimal installation of CentOS 6.6.

What you should do is start another terminal window or tab, in which you will be using your normal Ubuntu desktop/installation; then in that terminal, go to the same folder where you have your case. Then you can use commands such as gedit.

The other possibility would be to install gedit inside the container, but that would mean that you would waste disk space and the GUI would be a little bit slower.

So in review:
  • First terminal that has access to OpenFOAM+ that is installed inside the docker container.
  • Second terminal gives you traditional access for your Ubuntu desktop.
