Hello all,

I just installed OpenFOAM 1.4 using the guide that's posted on the wiki, and I think all that went fine (There was an issue with the path of gcc. Maybe that needs to be resolved as well.) But as for right now, I'm just trying to figure out what is meant by the following, which is posted on the tutorial page found on the OpenFOAM website
http://www.opencfd.co.uk/openfoam/doc/tutorials.html

" Copies of all tutorials are available from the tutorials directory of the OpenFOAM installation. The tutorials are organised into a set of subdirectories by solver, e.g. all the icoFoam cases are stored within a subdirectory icoFoam. It is strongly recommended that the user copy the tutorials directory into their local run directory. If not, they can be easily copied by typing:

mkdir -p $FOAM_RUN
cp -r $FOAM_TUTORIALS $FOAM_RUN
FoamX locates cases by the caseRoots path settings in the $WM_PROJECT_DIR/.OpenFOAM-1.4/controlDict file. If the user has copied the tutorials into their account as described above, the paths to the tutorial cases will be set correctly by default; otherwise the user must make a local copy of this file in $HOME/.OpenFOAM-1.4/controlDict to edit the paths accordingly."

I'm not really able to make heads or tails of this, but I think maybe all I need to know is was is meant by "local run directory." In other words, where do I need to be when I issue the commands
mkdir -p $FOAM_RUN
cp -r $FOAM_TUTORIALS $FOAM_RUN

And if you can give me any insight as to the significance of the $ in front of the names, I'd greatly appreciate it. Is that their way of saying that's not the actual code to use, but what the code should contain?

Thanks for any input you can give.

Quick answer: Anywhere, as long as you have correctly sourced the bashrc/cshrc files as indicated in the README. The $ symbol followed by some text is indicative of a variable name which in this case stores a path (for instance /home/jon or /home/jon/OpenFOAM and so on).

What you need is a UNIX/Linux primer. Google for a basic Unix tutorial and you should be fine.

Hello all,

I am trying to start with OpenFOAM-1.3,
The software has been installed long time ago in the university but I can't find the tutorials.
It sounds imposible but I have spent 3 days only trying openning the software!
There isn't run directory in my local directory.I have created it,but I can't copy the tutorials from the OpenFOAM installation because they aren't on the desktop (I haven't done the installation).
should I get contact again with the computer center who installed this program and they could get the tutorial for me , or is there a way to get the tutorials? Because I have contacted with them and it seems that they don't know too much about this
Thank you very much,

Hi Marta!

The tutorials are contained in the OpenFOAM-1.3.General-tarball. Jut download that, extract it to a safe place and copy the tutorials from OpenFOAM-1.3/tutorials
