Hi,

I am going to set up a new computer to play around with opencfd.

I would like to know which is the best linux distribution for this?

Which has precompiled rpms, for most easy installation ?

I am running RedHat EL4 at the university, Fedora Core 5 on the cluster and OpenSuse 10 (I know...Novell sucks) at home. OpenFoam is working OK on these systems, both running and compiling.

Just an addition: I tried it also on Debian Sarge and Slackware 10 without any problems.
In my oppinion, you may choose any linux distribution you like.

Hi All,
Does anyone have experience debugging in the OpenFOAM environment? I need to get down to solver level, to understand the framework as well as to maybe write my own kind of solver. Any tips on what tools to use etc.

Thanks in advance,
Susan.

I'd recommend OpenSUSE for var

I'd recommend OpenSUSE for various reasons:

- It's the original platform on which OpenFOAM is developed.

- It's easier to configure thanks to its integrated system tool (Yast), which is of great help especially for new users.

- It grants a two years long support cycle since the release date. So you don't have to worry about updates because you get them automatically.

I've no experience with debian and slackware, but I had some problems working with OpenFOAM on Fedora.

If you choose OpenSuSE 10.2, don't install the gcc compiler provided with OpenFOAM and just recompile OpenFOAM by running ./Allwmake in the OpenFOAM main directory. This is necessary because OpenSuSE 10.2 comes with a newer release of the compiler, which conflicts with the one provided with OpenFOAM.

Alberto

so i did choose opensuse 10.2 , did ./Allwmake and the installation run through. (I took the native Suese 10.2 gcc, as alberto suggested)

If i try to start FoamX i got the following error message:

Hello Andreas,
I've no problem running FoamX on opensuse 10.2 (32 bit).

Are you using the java version provided with OF?

First I did not have the java correct installed, but than FoamX complained about that. Than I did unpack the java version from OpenFOAM in the linux subfolder and made /Allwmake again. Than the error message changed, so I guess it finds java now.

I use Suse 10.2 AMD 32bit. I downloaded OpenFOAM AMD64 - but it think it is for 32-bit too !?

Is it correct to just unpack the java in the subfolder?

Yes, it is correct to unpack Java in that folder. But if you're running opensuse 32 bit, use OpenFOAM at 32 bit: http://www.opencfd.co.uk/openfoam/linux.html

The one you downloaded is for 64 bit systems and also java and paraview are compiled for AMD 64 bit platforms.

A.

after installing the 32 bit java version i could start foamX

thank u very much.

i was confused, since the former versions have been separated in pentium, and amd, so i thought amd64 would work for both, 32 and 64 bit.

could u install salome on suse 10.2 ? i seem to have problems mit omniORB too.
