I recommend you learn the basics of UNIX before installing OpenFOAM.

I haven't played with UNIX. I'm using linux instead. But, I think they are almost the same. So, in my experience, if UNIX system has
the directory named root, you can regard this directory as #HOME. If there is no root directory, I guess you can create a directory and named as root and then download the source
files into the directory. Good luck!

BTW, from your registered name, I guess you come from China. Right??
I'm a student of ZheJiang University and also a freshman in OpenFOAM. If you are interested in it, we can play with it together。Keep in touching!

If you have problem figuring out what $HOME is you
will most likely have some even bigger problems ahead of you that are related to unix/linux and not to OpenFOAM, please keep these kind of questions to a minimun, the answers to these questions can be found all over the web. This is a forum for OpenFOAM and not for unix/linux.

google this 'HOME environment variable linux'- should give you a place to start.

but if you want to find out what $HOME is i suggest you use echo, i.e. 'echo $HOME'

good luck,
Niklas

Hi,did you solve your new problem. If not, try the following command:

tar zxvf OpenFOAM-1.1.General.gtgz

In my opinion, if you want to go further with OpenFOAM, you should learn some elementary knowledge of UNIX system, such as how to unpack a file and how to compile and install a software.
Comparing with Windows, the UNIX system is distinct. So in the first stage, it maybe painful. But just spending a little time, everything will be OK.
