Hi, Mattijs,

Will netgenNeutralToFoam converter be included in OpenFOAM 1.1? When will OpenFOAM 1.1 be available? I tried to download netgenNeutralToFoam converter that you posted on this tread, but, no luck.

Regards,

Hi Pei,

maybe you could not downloaded it because the extension of the file is .unk but save that file and decompress it the usual way

tar -xzvf netgenNeutralToFoam-236.unk

Hi Joern

You are wrong about the suitability of Harpoon for serious CFD calculations. Almost all automotive companies around the world use Harpoon along with a large number of F1 teams in the motorsport arena. If you consider these types of flow calculations unimportant let me know !!

We already have formats exporting with hanging nodes, so if someone can point us in the direction of the OpenFoam mesh format, we can quickly add this file format to Harpoon.

You can find on-line documentation for the OpenFOAM mesh format on web-site:

http://www.opencfd.co.uk/openfoam/do...#x30-1480006.1

and also in PDF format from the web-site:

http://www.opencfd.co.uk/openfoam/doc/index.html

and this users-guide is also included in the releases in the doc directory. There are also many examples in the form of tutorials included in the releases for you to study.

Hi Richard,

I used the term "serious scientific work" and this is not the same as doing serious, important and urgent engineering work, at least for me ;-)

Hi Richard,

As you know, any new meshing interface for Foam would be a very welcome development. I have written the Foam mesh classes and most converters - please give me a shout if I can be of assistance.

Regards,

Hrv

Has anyone managed to get a Harpoon mesh into OpenFOAM? I am a bit stuck with a mesh with embedded refinement:
- the Star files are written in binary which the converter cannot read
- the Fluent ,,
- the Gambit file uses cellshapes so cannot represent embedded refinement.

What if you read the files into star and then export them again. You also might contact Richard Bardwell and ask him if he has already implemented the native FOAM support in Harpoon.

If the mesh is not too big I might do the conversion for you.

Hi Joern,

tried this (read them into Star, export them as .ccm and run ccmToFoam)

So what are the exact commands you use in Prostar/OpenFOAM?

You can not export the ccm format from prostar. If you want to get the ccm format you have to export the .ngeom file from prostar (command "ngeom"), read this into ccm+ and export the .ccm file from there.

I would simply read the files into prostar (ifile "file.inp") and follow the procedure described in the manual.

At wich point do you have problems? I never tried to do it myself (from Harpoon to FOAM) but it should work.

Hi Joern,

thanks. The problem is that I do not have Prostar or CCM or Harpoon myself so the 'loop' is rather long. I'll see if we can do your export trick.

Can Harpoon export in Star ascii format?

Hi Mattijs

Would an ascii version of the Star format help get to OpenFoam? Would the translator be able to read the couples?
Most of the formats in Harpoon have their ascii equivalent but we do not export them just for speed and space on the disk issues

Maybe. The files have to conform to the section in the User Guide (6.4.2), exporting from Prostar (so be compact, have no shells in them and a few other conditions).

Are there any experience to import Harpoon meshes? Does it work (well)?

I am looking for a good mesher which can deal with OpenFoam.

There are lot of problems with the different mesh converts so what prefered mesh format (star, gambit ...) for Foam?

Hi, Chris,

When I contacted a Harpoon sales rep few months ago, they were working on direct OpenFOAM export from Harpoon (no conversion required). Hopefully, it will be released soon. I am looking forward to testing it myself.

Hi guys,

I think the Harpoon guys need some more pushing. I haven't seen any OpenFOAM export in the last release and haven't heard from them for a few months as well.

I agree with Mattijs,

this is the information I get yesterday from Richard Bardwell:

We have done some work on an export to OpenFOAM. We can only justify
completeing the export if we receive an order from someone who wants it

As yet we have not received such an order

...

If you buy Harpoon, we will put it in

-> I am sure that a lof of people use Harpoon already so push them to support OpenFoam!

I think the more people are asking for Foam support the more Sharc will implement this feature!

Hi,

For me, I use interFOAM most of the time, which requires good quality Hex elements. It is not clear to me how good harpoon is without testing it first.

Will it be easier if the Harpoon people add the fluent/CFX/Star-CD ascii export (it only has binary export now and OpenFOAM cannot read it), then, it can be converted to OpenFOAM from fluent/gambit format?

I think that Richard wanted to add the ASCII export of the StarCD format some time ago. This should work fine for OpenFOAM.

I thought the Star/Fluent ASCII exports would not have the hanging faces maintained when converted to OpenFOAM. Can someone verify this?
